Founded in 2010, the HMUNO is a non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting MUN in Greek schools and, in this, the first of its kind.

The HMUNO aims to bring MUN to the mainstream of Greek High School activities as an invaluable educational tool. This we hope to achieve both by actively informing the teaching community and, most importantly, by pressing the Ministry of Education to formally recognise MUN as an official school activity and thus provide teachers with additional motivation and an official recognition of their hard work.

Our Organisation is primarily committed to the continuing organisation of AMUN (Athens Model United Nations) and TMUN (Thessaloniki Model United Nations). These two conferences, organised on an annual basis in the two major Greek cities have grown and established themselves as a regular fixture in the agendas of many schools. To this date, more than 2300 students have participated in either AMUN or TMUN. It is our hope that the creation of an organisation focused exclusively on MUN will be instrumental in bringing those involved in MUN in Greece closer together, promoting cooperation and the sharing of experience between MUN organisers and participants alike, ultimately expanding this community and bringing everything that MUN has to offer to as many schools and students as possible.

A bit of history...

The HMUNO comes as a natural development in the history of the Athens Model United Nations. Organised for the first time in 1998 by the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC), the conference began attracting an ever growing number of schools until the UNIC closed down in late 2003. Immediately afterwards, the conference was “adopted” by the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights and the AMUN Organising Team came into being in its present form. A year before that, in 2002, the same team already active at the time was involved in setting up the first session of the Thessaloniki Model United Nations, which immediately became AMUN's sister conference.

Six years on, the next step was long overdue...

It is our hope that you will all - teachers and students alike - join in this effort and support our goals. If you are new to MUN and wish to become involved, you can get started by visiting the "Model UN in Greece" section, where you will find introductory resources as well as a calendar for MUN conferences in Greece. The AMUN and TMUN have their own separate websites containing conference specific information covering every aspect of participation.

We are looking forward to meeting you at one of our conferences!
